Restoring the Pearl of the Orient

Sri Lanka was once called the Pearl of the Orient. Our objective at SHORE is to help this beautiful island recover from the disastrous effects of the Tsunami so that it can once again carry that description with pride and joy.

Sinnemugthavrum Village: Re-building a whole community

The village of Sinnemugthavarum was wiped out by the tsunami with nothing remaining. The Methodist church has purchased 14.5 acres of land that borders the lagoon and is situated along the coast line? the aim is to relocate and establish 341 families who are presently in refugee camps, many split from other members of their family who may be residing in other camps some distance away.

Each basic house consists of living room, bedroom, kitchen and toilet. This land which is bought will be gifted with title deed to those families who lost home in this village, and there is enough land on each plot to expand the house and even have room for a vegetable garden and trees. A nominal contribution will be required for legal reasons and will be in the form of a 5 year mini loan. The purpose is to postpone the acquisition of title deeds for 5 years in order to prevent people from selling houses for profit? and also to help reestablish a sense of community.

Requirement:

One house costs £3,800 (650,000rps) and we need funding to build these houses. Sponsorship can be for 1 or more houses.

Rebuilding counsellors' homes

Support of two counsellors with their house repairs to reunite their family. These two individuals are key people and know senior counsellors who provide counselling to their community. The people they help every day don’t know they are also still homeless, estranged from their own children who are being taken care of in children’s homes far away. To help them focus on their duties, to which they have been so committed since the beginning of the tsunami, without undue stress, we require money to rebuild their home.

Wreckage of boats found almost a Kilometre from the Beach!

Destruction of a community along the shore.

Tents erected at designated camp sites - the
immediate help till Houses are rebuilt.

Here is a foundation that has been laid out but only can be finished in very slow stages as the family gather money to pay one step at a time. To help these counsellors who are giving so much to their community will help free their minds from worry and unite their family life.
